Thank you for your interest in training at VCBJJ. Before reaching out or signing up, please read this page completely. It will help you determine if our training philosophy, schedule, and policies align with your BJJ goals.
We believe in transparency and want you to make an informed decision. This isn't about being the biggest gym or having the most members—it's about finding the right students who will thrive in our training environment.
VCBJJ focuses on conceptual, problem-solving BJJ rather than memorizing hundreds of techniques. We emphasize:
Understanding principles over collecting moves
Safety and longevity in training
Ego-free environment where everyone helps each other improve
Quality over quantity - small classes mean more individual attention
Gi-based training that builds fundamental grappling skills
Our sessions are structured around technique development and focused drilling, with live rolling that emphasizes learning rather than winning.
This approach works best for people who:
Value understanding "why" techniques work, not just "how"
Prefer deliberate practice over high-intensity scrambles
Want to train BJJ for years without burning out or getting injured
Enjoy problem-solving and thinking through positions
Are self-motivated learners who take responsibility for their progress

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Membership & Fees
❓ Do you offer trial sessions?
A: No. Our fees are transparent and competitive. We don't inflate prices to offer "free trials." You know exactly what you're paying upfront.
❓ Can I pay monthly instead of per class?
A: No. We only offer pay-per-class pricing. This gives you flexibility—train when you want without contracts or commitments.
❓ Are there any hidden or surprise costs?
A: None. Registration, admin fees, membership, belt awards, and gradings are included at no extra charge.
❓ What if I need to miss a class I've paid for?
A: All sales are final with no refunds or credits. Cancel 12+ hours before the session for no penalty.
❓ I don't see your training schedule
A: Group classes: NoGi Mondays 7pm, Gi Thursdays 7pm. Private training: based on reservation
Typical Training
❓ I'm a complete beginner. Can I join group classes?
A: Yes, but we strongly recommend starting with private training sessions for your first few (3?) months. This builds a solid foundation and helps you learn safely before joining group classes. Private sessions can be arranged based on your timing.
❓ Do you teach self-defense?
A: Our focus is sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with and without the Gi. While BJJ has self-defense applications, we train within sport BJJ rules and contexts rather than specific self-defense scenarios.
❓ What's the difference between Gi and NoGi classes?
A: Gi classes use the traditional kimono (jacket and pants), which allows for grip-based techniques. NoGi uses rash guards and shorts. Both develop grappling skills, but our belt ranking system only applies to Gi training.
❓ Can I train at both Monday and Thursday classes?
A: Absolutely! You can attend as many or as few classes as you like. Pay per class with no subscription required.
❓ Do I need to buy equipment or a uniform?
A: You'll need a Gi for Thursday classes and appropriate workout clothes for Monday NoGi. We don't require specific brands or patches. Make sure everything is clean and in good condition.
❓ What kind of jiu jitsu do you train here?
A. In a nutshell, a hybrid, non-traditional gi and no-gi submission wrestling based on BJJ referenced by mixed martial arts competitions, and IBJJF/ASJJF styled competitions.
❓ What are classes like?
Chilled & relaxed centered around building skills rather than focusing on winning at all costs
No bowing to photos on the wall
No "oss-ing"
No "porrada" everyday
No "creonte" culture. You want to train at another gym? No problem. You train at other gyms and want to train with us? No problem.
I personally don't care about what other gyms are doing or not doing. I'm focused on your progress and growth.
❓ Does your gym compete?
A. As a hobbyist club competing is optional. I have students who enjoy competing regularly. There are pros and cons to competing as much as there are pros and cons to not competing. The decision remains an individual choice. The large majority of the class do not compete.
BJJ for Kids
A: VCBJJ focuses exclusively on adult training (18+). However, JEET ACADEMY KL—where we train—offers an excellent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Kids Program.

About Facilities & Logistics
❓ Can I bring my child to watch me train?
A: No. There are no childcare facilities, and children cannot attend or spectate. This is a safety and liability policy.
❓ Can I bring a friend to watch?
A: No. Only people with confirmed reservations can attend. No spectators or guests without prior approval.
❓ Where do I park?
A: JEET ACADEMY is located at 14-2, Jln Telawi 3, Bangsar. Street parking and nearby parking facilities are available in the Bangsar area.
❓ What should I bring to class?
A: Clean Gi (Thursday) or workout clothes (Monday), water bottle, towel, and positive attitude. Mouthguards are recommended but optional.
Belt Progression
❓ How long until I get my next belt?
A: Belt progression is individualized and subjective. I observe your problem-solving abilities, technique efficiency, and development over time especially when you are sparring. There's no fixed timeline. Best strategy is to focus on acquiring skills and not collecting belts.
❓ Can I get promoted if I also train at another gym?
A: Belt gradings require exclusive commitment to VCBJJ. If you're receiving rank from another instructor, you should continue with them for consistency. I only grade students who commit to progressing through our classes.
❓ Do you charge for belt tests?
A: No. There will never be any fees for gradings, tests, or rank promotions. Ever.
